Life As a Newlywed: Fall Date Ideas

Summer is officially over and we’re into fall, one of my absolute favorite seasons!  If your relationship is anything like mine you know how insanely busy a summer can be and how hard it can be to spend time doing things you love together.  So while we’re trading flip flops for riding boots, boats for hayrides and baseball games for football games, fall gives us plenty of activities to enjoy our weekends together.

Weekends filled with weddings and wedding planning have come to a close for us so it’s time to plan the laid-back weekends while the weather is still enjoyable.  And boy do I have a hefty list of date ideas for the hubby and I to try out this season.  Here are a few of my favorite activities for the upcoming fall weekends.

Trip to the Apple Orchard, Pumpkin Patch with a Hayride

Each year I talk about wanting to go to the apple orchard or pumpkin patch on a beautiful fall day.  I really want to bring the camera and capture all that fall has to offer – the leaves changing color, the ripe apples, an abundance of bright orange pumpkins to carve and decorate with and lots and lots of hayrides.  There are a ton of apple orchards around the Twin Cities and a lot of them include an array of additional activities so you can spend the whole day there.  Of course this activity is much more fun when it’s a beautiful day so you will definitely want to watch the weather before determining which weekend you’ll spend enjoying all it has to offer!

Taking in a Football Game

I’m sure you’ve read in past posts that I’m a football lover – which is one of the many reasons I love fall.  This is definitely an activity I know the hubs would love because he’s a bigger football fan than I am and it’s a great way to get out of the house.  Living near Minneapolis, we have a variety of games to take in – whether it’s pro, college or a high school game, there’s always fun to be had.  Add in a couple of hours for tailgating and yard [err, parking lot] games and you’ve got a fun couple of hours during a Saturday or Sunday.  If you’d prefer to watch the game from the comforts of your home, no worries!  Host some friends for a football themed party!  Prep fun football-themed snacks and have some fun games to play during half-time and post game – who wouldn’t be up for a little competition?!

Fall Colors Tour

Minnesota is absolutely gorgeous in the fall… so much so that there are many companies that offer guided tours.  We are the Land of 10,000 lakes, so there are plenty of lake/river tours that allow you a few hours to enjoy everything nature has to offer.  Grab a blanket, a thermos of hot chocolate or coffee, a fun picnic basket filled with a delicious lunch and you have an afternoon or day filled with time together.  And don’t forget your camera – you definitely will have some beautiful scenery to admire through your lens.

Hot Air Balloon Ride

This could be another fun way to check out all nature has to offer during fall.  In Minneapolis this is definitely an activity that you don’t want to do too late in the season as the weather will be a tad chilly, especially being so high up!  Like the fall tour, make a day of it – pack some hot chocolate and mugs, some yummy sandwiches and enjoy a couple of hours looking over your city.  *I just want to add that this is on my 30 Before 30 List so if anyone talks to my hubby, can you please let me know this would be a great surprise! 🙂

Vineyard Tour and Wine Tasting

The hubby and I did a wine tasting and vineyard tour a couple of years ago when I came across a Groupon that I just couldn’t pass up… and let me tell you, we had a blast!  The weather was perfect the day we went and it was so fun to sample so many different types of wine made by local wineries.  After the tasting, we had fun touring the vineyard – seeing the rows and rows of grapes and learning a little more about the process of turning those grapes into wine.  This particular vineyard also had a few animals on-site – like a really pretty peacock that roamed the yard.  The only downside to this activity is driving.  It’s hard to fully enjoy yourself at a winery when one of you has to drive.  Most of the wineries around the Cities are in rural areas so it’s not easy to just hop in a cab or roam the city while you sober up a bit.  So be responsible folks, plan a sober ride!  And if you’re loving the wine, take a few bottles home and enjoy when no one needs to think about driving.

Haunted House and a Bonfire

Get in the Halloween spirit by taking in a haunted house and capping it off with a bonfire.  I think this is one of the ultimate fall date ideas because it’s a way to bring you two together – I mean, when you get scared you can jump into each other’s arms [cue the sappy music here].  This is a fun event to make a night of it – grab a cozy dinner, a couple of glasses of wine your mittens and prep yourself for fear and handholding!

Antique Shopping

There are quite a few communities in the Twin Cities that have big antique shopping days the first weekend of each month and what better way to spend the day than trolling around the cute ma and pa shops looking for fun decor to decorate your home together!  The hubby and I shopped around a couple of antique stores when we were on our minimoon and had a blast!  Being the sports lover he is, he bought a few old sports memorabilia items while I cruised the aisles looking for home accents [did I tell you about the cute beverage set I passed up that still haunts me?!].  Grab a quick bite to eat and enjoy spending a few hours together!  Side note: If you’re ever in Minnesota be sure you check out Stillwater – there are a ton of cute little antique shops and it’s right on the river so walking around is gorgeous this time of year!

With life starting to slow down and easing into the traditional winter slumber, it’s important to spend time together when you can.  In Minnesota, it’s also important to enjoy the weather as much as you can!  I hope these date ideas provide you with some fun activities to spend time with your significant other and you remember how much fun it is to be together.  So go on, get to planning that next date and make a day of it… enjoy yourselves; be silly, be spontaneous, be crazy and remember what it is you love about being with each other when life gets all too crazy!
